21. Award-Winning Design with Marcus Paulsen of Lupulin Brewing
The group dives right into how Marcus got into art, his art style, and how he gained professional experience in graphic design that led him to Lupulin Brewing. Marcus's tale of how he approached the owners of Lupulin is different than most. It began on a fateful night in a garage where he transformed himself from a light lager drinker into the designer of Lupulin's iconic hop cone logo.
Listen if you want to hear about Marcus's style and his process and inspiration for Lupulin's beer can design. They discuss the different printing processes used on the cans, from matte to metallic. Of course, they spend time discussing Coffee Shop Assault Vehicle, the first design he drew for Lupulin when he began full time and the platinum award he earned for it. Marcus even spills an easter egg on that design!
Years in the making, Scribbled Lines takes center stage with a discussion on how separate it is from the main brewery. This is clear in how they craft the beer as well as the brand and design of its packaging. We taste Star Damage w/ Tangerine & Cashmere – Brady's favorite sour, named after one of Marcus's favorite comics. Future Scribbled Lines bottle designs will incorporate fellow Lupulin employee Abi (@the_mn_hopportunity) and her watercolors.
Other topics include: attention to detail, the role design plays in consumer choice, lack of outside influence, and expectations of beer based on name and color. Marcus closes out by encouraging people to pursue what makes them uncomfortable and to never give up on their dreams.
